@Creative
This forum discussion centers around student critiques of their math teacher, Zhang Kai. While the original poster (OP) initially offered a balanced perspective, acknowledging both positive and negative aspects of Zhang’s teaching, the conversation quickly shifted towards overwhelmingly negative feedback.
Here’s a summary of the main complaints:
- Unpleasant Demeanor: Zhang Kai is described as having a “terrible temper,” scolding students for minor infractions like slow test-passing or questioning where to submit homework. One student even recounts being repeatedly called out by name while using the restroom during exam preparation.
- Small, Illegible Handwriting: Many students, including those in the back rows, complain about the small size of Zhang’s board writing, making it difficult to read and follow along. Although the OP suggests some students might simply need glasses, the consensus is that the writing is too small, especially for those further away.
- Slow Teaching Pace and Irrelevant Content: Students express frustration with the slow pace of instruction, coupled with Zhang’s tendency to cover material outside the exam scope. This raises concerns about misplaced learning priorities and potential disadvantages compared to other classes.
- Unreasonable Expectations and Grading Practices: The incident of a student being reprimanded for laughing is cited as an example of Zhang’s inflexibility and lack of understanding. While the OP attempts to contextualize this incident, other students maintain that the teacher’s reaction was inappropriate. Additionally, Zhang’s grading practices, particularly regarding “refined grading” of certain problems, are criticized as unfair and inconsistent.
- Overemphasis on Homework Grading: While the OP initially praises Zhang’s thoroughness in grading homework, other students argue that this is a basic expectation of a teacher, not something worthy of special commendation. They compare this to praising actors for performing basic tasks, suggesting it sets a low bar.
- Ineffective Teaching Leading to Self-Study: Several students admit to relying heavily on self-study and external resources like Yuque and Zuoyebang because they find Zhang’s in-class instruction insufficient. They describe feeling lost and unable to solve problems based on his teaching.
The discussion also touches on broader issues, like the lack of student agency in choosing teachers and the perceived decline in the class’s overall performance compared to previous years. Some students express a desire for a return to a system where students can select their preferred teachers based on teaching style and compatibility.
Overall, the sentiment is that Zhang Kai’s teaching style is not conducive to learning for a significant portion of the class. While the OP attempts to present a more nuanced view, the majority of responses highlight negative experiences and express dissatisfaction with his methods. The students’ frustration and reliance on self-study suggest a need for intervention or a change in teaching approach.
